Grants boost 'Click it or Ticket' enforcement over Memorial Day holida

MONTGOMERY, AL- Gov. Robert Bentley has
awarded nine grants to support the "Click It or Ticket" traffic safety campaign
now underway. The effort continues over the Memorial Day weekend through
Sunday, June 2.

Law enforcement agencies across the state are working overtime to enforce
Alabama's seat belt laws and remove dangerous drivers from the roadways as part
of the enforcement campaign. The grants, totaling $200,000, pay overtime for
officers to conduct seat-belt safety checkpoints and extra patrols in areas
where a high number of vehicle crashes have occurred.

Jim Byard Jr., director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community
Affairs, said the goal of the campaign is to save lives and reduce injuries.
"The extra patrols and increased visibility of law enforcement officers should
remind motorists that seat belts and safe driving are especially critical
during major holidays," Byard said.

Officials: Ala. 'mystery illness' situation solved

Alabama Health Officer Dr. Don Williamson

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- After several days of worries that Alabama could be dealing with the outbreak of a potentially new illness, the Alabama Department of Public Health is confident they've solved the mystery.

In a news conference held Thursday, Alabama Health Officer Dr. Don Williamson said ADPH and the Houston County Health Department have determined that the cause of a respiratory illness cluster in southeast Alabama was a combination of influenza A, rhinovirus, the virus associated with the common cold, and bacterial pneumonia.

According to Williamson, there is no evidence of anything unusual in the flu viruses of the patients.  All viruses have been identified. He described the situation as, "a clustering of cases with reasonable explanations."

Five years after a Fort Rucker Soldier was killed in Afghanistan, the installation ensures that his legacy lives on by naming a police dog kennel facility after him.

The Fort Rucker Military Working Dog kennels will now be known as the Tabb Kennels in honor Sgt. 1st Class Donald T. Tabb, who served with the 6th Military Police Detachment as a military working dog handler, in a decision that was deemed by Fort Rucker officials as “the right thing to do.”

“This was a ‘no brainer’,” said Lisa Eichhorn, Fort Rucker public affairs officer. “Sergeant Tabb was really important to Fort Rucker and it was important to us that the Family knows that we still think about him, and that the MPs still highly regard his service.”

“After all these years, it gives us great comfort to know that his work was appreciated,” said William Smith, Tabb’s brother.

Ala. mystery illness cases climb to 10; CDC still investigating

HOUSTON CO., AL (WSFA)- The number of mystery illness cases affecting Alabama is growing. Wednesday, Alabama Department of Public Health spokeswoman Dr. Mary McIntyre confirmed the number rose to ten overnight from a previous report of seven. Two people have died.

"Since we sent out the alert to providers last night, we have had three additional patients/cases," Dr. McIntyre told WSFA 12 News. "These patients all have the same symptoms of cough, shortness of breath and "something" on their chest x-rays," she explained.

Dr. McIntyre says it wasn't immediately known if all the new cases were in southeast Alabama, like the previous seven. But she said at least one person was admitted to Southeast Alabama Medical Center in the last 24 hours.

"We have staff right now in the field trying to get additional information about the other two patients," McIntyre said. No additional information on the three new cases is immediately available.
